Single Story Explained:
My conceptual definition of "a single story" is anything that is accepted to be true, without reference to other facts to form our beliefs. The problem with single stories is not that they aren't true, but that they are incomplete. Many of us are victims of assumptions and claims with no proof.
About 10 years ago, I had a reason to travel to one of the eastern States in my country. The single story I heard about the particular State was that her people were dangerous and human eaters. I was perplexed because it was a call to service, a journey to serve my fatherland.
Going forward, I left for the State with fear of the unknown. Conversely, the warm welcome I received from the park on my arrival was a mixed feeling; could it be that the people suddenly became nice for easy penetration? That was the thought running through my head. Although, my stated mission and identity might have accorded me the received honor.
Against the single story, I settled down with lovable people throughout my stay. Nobody ever told me they were lovable people who could go the extra mile to ensure the safety and comfort of visitors. I was not eaten neither was I endangered.
