A Teacher for almost 20 years (Where does the time go!?) and an Early Years Specialist for 10. Passionate about early childhood development and education reform.
So much of our society's response to mental health still follows the reactive model where we wait until something is a problem before trying to fix it on a case by case basis much akin to fire fighting. As an early years specialist, I believe now is the time to promote a more proactive model that seeks to go back to the start of life. To establish strong foundations in wellbeing, growth mindset and positive mental health for all children at their most influential developmental stages, not just to prepare them for when the challenges come but also to empower them to thrive far beyond that.
Over the last few years I have been developing a program within the Early Years Foundation Stage that does exactly that; built around three core strands of child development: Self-esteem (How I see myself), Character (How I engage) and Resilience (How I respond). We teach this to the children as, 'I am', 'I can' and 'I will'. It's exciting as we are already starting to see significant results both in the levels of child wellbeing as well as academic progress across the board.
Would love to hear from you if you are working in a similar field or would like to hear more. If you are interested to follow my early journey, here is a blog series I wrote for Twinkl Education all about it. It starts off by discussing what matters more in Early Years education - Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED) or Literacy and Numeracy. The latter posts link to my exploration of how to translate the emergent pedagogy and scientific theory into meaningful practice that can make a real difference to empowering young children to build those strong foundations in Self-Esteem, Character and Resilience whilst fostering a personal love of learning and life!
Look forward to connecting, sharing and learning with you.

My philosophy is to always assume that I/we don't know it all and to seek to learn and grow from others. Be open to the other side and look to see things through others' eyes. Together we are stronger and together we will grow.
