As Founder and Executive Director of Global Lighthouse Studios I am working across six continents with K-12 Educators and University students surrounding global issues that we are all facing. This semester-long global collaboration called FACING TOMORROW will focus this semester on Sustainable Cities. Covering topics such as transport systems, urban planning, water, sanitation, waste management, pollution, disaster risk reduction, education and sustainable agriculture, students and teachers will have an opportunity to collaborate internationally and have classroom discussions around these social, emotional and environmental issues. Students will take a deep dive into the Sustainable Development Goals of 2030 and the impact surrounding these important global goals. Using mentor films available through SIMA classroom, students will build and develop global awareness skills and social-emotional competencies while making cross cultural connections with peers. This unit will allow students the opportunity to have lively discussions connecting ancient civilizations of the past and cities of the future. Students will make connections beginning with Maslow’s hierarchy of needs as a foundational piece when building a civilization. Students will make connections between patterns and systems that existed in these ancient civilizations, how they are still seen today in modern societies and how they can have an impact on cities of the future. Students will then make connections and have experiences to help them develop a deeper understanding and empathy for people who lived long ago and people today who are facing the same challenges as our ancestors.
We plan to have experts join us and give opportunities for unique virtual field trips as well. We are looking for teachers and their students to join this project virtually from every continent around the world. Please join us for this first ever global unit and let’s get our students of today thinking about tomorrow.
